A New York City police officer on his way home from work shot and killed himself on the Long Island Expressway.

Authorities said highway safety Officer Matthew Schindler was returning home around 4:30 p.m. Monday after his shift ended at the 115th Precinct station house in Jackson Heights, Queens, when he pulled his car over on the eastbound side of the LIE near Exit 40 and shot himself under the chin.

Reports say moments before the suicide Schindler, a 14-year veteran, sent his sergeant a text telling him that he wouldn’t be seeing him anymore.

Authorities say that the married father-of-three did not leave a suicide note.
