Casting call: “Nice looking, friendly, Not TOO DARK” African American male actor needed to play the role of a car dealer in a commercial.
This is the casting call that went out for the Super Bowl Acura commercial with Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno.
When asked by TMZ why a “dark” African American guy was not right for the role, someone associated with casting said “because lighting and special effects would get tricky.”
This is a bunch of bullshit….they wanted a “NOT TOO DARK” brother because in their minds lighter blacks, or “high yellow” blacks are not threatening to white folks.
If this casting call was for a fast food restaurant or something sports related they would have “preferred” a dark brother, but because it was for a “business” role, they wanted to make him very non-threatening.
This kind of practice is not just limited to Hollywood, it’s part of everyday living in corporate America!
This is the reason why Tyler Perry makes the movies he does for black folks because there are still limited roles in Hollywood for dark skin black people.
