A 12-year-old Michigan girl was murdered last night inside her Detroit home after an altercation between her mother and another person over a cell phone ended with shots being fired.
Five hours after the 8:45 p.m. incident, police arrested a 35-year-old mother and her 19-year-old son over the killing.
The girl’s mother, Amanda Talton, told reporters the incident started earlier in the day on Tuesday when she went to a tax preparer’s office, which was located inside a house on Littlefield, to confront the preparer about a refund she had not received.
While there, Talton said she asked to use the restroom and while using the facility she found a cell phone and gave it to man working in the tax service business.
Talton said after realizing she was not going to get her refund check she left the office and returned to her home in the 19400 block of Ferguson.
About an hour later Talton said a man from the tax business appeared at her door and at first she thought he was there to give her a check but instead, he asked her about the cell phone.
Talton said she told the man she had given the phone to another man who was at the tax service business and she closed the door. Just as she closed the door, Talton said “there was gunfire coming through the door.”
Talton said everyone inside the house “were running and getting down” but when she called her daughter, Kade’jah, she did not respond.
Talton said she then looked in the living room and saw her daughter lying in a pool of blood on the floor.
Police later arrested a mother, who had accompanied her son to Talton’s home and her shooter son, who they have not yet publicly identified, about five hours after the shooting.
It is unclear whether the mother was the tax preparer.
Kade’jah Davis, who was a sixth grader at University Yes Academy in Detroit, had just celebrated her 12th birthday last Sunday.
