In front of a crowd of about 350,000 spectators and in 95degrees weather, Dario made Indy history by being the seventh driver to win three races.
The 96th Indianapolis 500 was one of the most competitive in Indy 500 history and Dario really wanted to win this one for his best friend and fellow racer, Dan Wheldon, who died last October in the Las Vegas 300.
In his victory speech, Dario, who is the husband of actress Ashley Judd, thanked the crowd for the love and support they showed for Dan.
“I just want to dedicate this to two of Indianapolis finest, Dan Wheldon and Michael Wanser [son of Barry Wanser of Target/Chip Ganassi Racing]. Thanks to all of the Indianapolis fans for their tribute to Dan today.”
With tears in her eyes, Ashley joined her husband in Victory Lane with Dan’s widow.
Dario also honored Dan after the race by wearing a pair of Wheldon’s trademark white sunglasses.
