An elderly NY couple driving through Connecticut over the weekend died after their Cadillac spun out of control on Interstate 95 then burst into flames.
Authorities say 63-year-old Ronnie Hughes from Queens, New York was driving his Cadillac CTS on I-95 in Fairfield when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a metal guardrail. Witnesses said the vehicle then spun across the traffic lanes before bursting into flames.
Hughes and his 67-year-old wife, Mary, who was a passenger in the front seat, were taken to local hospitals in Bridgeport, where Mary was pronounced dead.
Ronnie Hughes is at the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital. An update on his condition was not available at press time.
Authorities say no one else was injured in the accident.
The accident, which occurred Saturday afternoon, forced emergency personnel to close a one-mile stretch of the highway between Exits 23 and 24 for several hours.
