Authorities in Brazil fear a group leader and 100 of his followers are preparing to kill themselves today because they believe the end of the world has come.
Officials said they received information that the group’s leader, ‘Daddy” Luis Pereira dos Santos, convinced his followers that the Apocalypse will happen today at 4:00 p.m. local time.
It is believed the group is preparing to kill themselves by drinking soup laced with poison.
Reports say Santos told his followers that an angel visited him four years ago telling him the exact time the world was coming to an end.
Last month, the 43-year-old leader convinced his flock to quit their jobs, take their kids out of school and give away their possessions. Since then, the group has been living inside a 10-bedroom house, which they call The Ark, in the city of Teresina.
Military police forced their way into the house on Thursday and removed 19 babies and children. A police spokesman said officers found rat poison inside the residence.
Most of Santos’ followers are said to be former street beggars, prostitutes and drug dealers.
Police are currently guarding the compound waiting to enter the house.
