The station’s vice president and general manager said Jackson died Wednesday at a hospital.

The cause of death was not immediately known.

Until a few weeks ago, 96-year-old Jackson did a regular show on WBLS called “Sunday Classics”.

Jackson was born in Charleston, South Carolina on November 3, 1915, but grew up in Washington, D.C. where he attended Howard University.

He began his broadcasting career at Howard as a sports announcer for home baseball games and local Negro league baseball games.

In 1954, Jackson moved to New York City where he worked at three different radio stations doing three different shows.

In 1971, Jackson and Percy Sutton, a former Manhattan borough president, co-founded the Inner City Broadcasting Corporation and acquired WLIB, becoming the first African-American owned and operated station in New York. The call letters were later changed to WBLS.

Inner City Broadcasting Corporation, which Jackson was the chairman of, owned and operated stations in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Fort Lauderdale, Columbia, South Carolina and Mississippi.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg described Jackson as a “legend,” saying “Hal was not only the first African-American voice on network radio or the first African-American play-by-play sports announcer, but an iconic legend who, during the Civil Rights movement, gave voice to the many who simply did not have one.”

Mr. Jackson served as the executive producer and host of the Talented Teens International competition, which highlights “the intelligence, creativity and talents of young minority women.”

In 1995, Jackson became the first African-American to be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame.

Reports say Gibb, who was one-third of the singer group the Bee Gees, died after undergoing intestinal surgery on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Bee Gees released a statement saying in part: “The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery.  The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

Fears for the star’s health were first raised last year when he appeared looking gaunt on a TV show to promote his single for Poppy Day.

The sixty-two year old singer leaves behind his wife Dwina and three grown children.

Robin Gibb dead at the age of 62.

Bates College student Evan Dube was in the UK with a group of 10 other students from the Maine school when they took advantage of the beautiful day on Saturday and went for a barbecue in Lerwick.

Scottish authorities said “Evan went into the water and after coming ashore appears to have collapsed.”

The 19-year-old New Hampshire native was airlifted to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Bates College released a statement saying in part that their community “has been shaken and deeply saddened to learn that first-year student Evan Dube died.  At this time we have no other information about the incident to offer…Evan’s fellow students in Scotland are receiving grief counseling and will return to Boston on Tuesday.

An autopsy is planned for sometime today.

Reports say the Grammy winner, who had been battling cancer, was in her Florida home at the time of her death.

TMZ is reporting that Summer died of lung cancer, which she believed she contracted by inhaling toxic particles after the 9/11 attacks in New York City.

Summer was born LaDonna Adrian Gaines on December 31, 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts.

She began singing in the church at a very young age, and while in her teens she formed several musical groups, including one with her sister and a cousin.

The singer dropped out of high school and joined the psychedelic rock group the Crow as their lead singer; however, the group was short-lived and Summer moved to New York City.

In 1968, she auditioned for the role of Sheila in the Broadway musical Hair but the part was given to Melba Moore.  However, when the musical moved to Europe Donna was offered the role.  She took the role and while in Germany she decided to make it her home for several years.

Summer married Austrian actor Helmuth Sommer in 1972 and in 1973 she gave birth to their first child Mimi Sommer.

Shortly thereafter, Donna divorced Sommer but kept his last name, anglicizing it to “Summer.”

Summer continued to work in Europe while living with her new boyfriend Peter Muhldorfer.

In the early 1970s she began singing background for the Three Dog Night and that’s where she met producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte.  She signed a deal with the European label Groovy Records and released her first album with them “Lady of the Night.”

In 1975 Donna approached Moroder with a song she wand Bellotte was working on.  The song was “Love to Love you, Baby.”

The song was very successful in Europe, reaching the Top 5 in the UK.

“Love to love you, Baby,” was then sent to Casablanca Records in hopes of getting it released in the U.S.

A 17-minute version of the song was released in the U.S. and it reached number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Brown’s manager released a statement today saying the 75-year-old musician died of multi-organ failure from sepsis at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Brown began his musical career in the 1960s playing the guitar with Jerry Butler and The Earls of Rhythm.

He was best known for her hit songs, “I Need Some Money” and “Bustin Loose”, which was interpolated by Nelly in his 2002 number one hit song “Hot in Herre.”

At the time of his death Brown was still performing in the Washington D.C area.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

It is believed Mitchell was on a boat in the Belle River in Louisiana around 9:00 a.m. Monday when he suffered a seizure.

Reports say the other person who was on the boat with Mitchell returned the boat to the dock and called 911.

Mitchell was rushed to a nearby Teche Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Swamp People, which debut on the History channel on August 22, 2010, follows the day-to-day activities for several people living in the Atchafalaya River Basin swamp in Louisiana.

Mitchell appeared with his brother Glenn on the show.

It’s unclear whether Glenn was the other person on the boat.

The 70-year-old singer was in Tokyo for a series of shows when he died in his sleep early Sunday morning.

Dunn’s death was confirmed by a spokesperson for Tokyo Blue Note, the last venue Dunn played.

Dunn, who was born in Memphis, Tennessee, was nicknamed “Duck” by his father because he enjoyed watching Donald Duck, the Disney cartoon character when he was a child.

In addition to being a bass guitarist, Dunn was also a record producer and a songwriter.

Dunn also played with The Blues Brothers, Neil Young, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Rod Stewart, Bob Dylan and Wilson Pickett.

Tyshyra Hines, Bernadette Harris, Alicia Gosten and Ieshia Nelson were on their way to a party when the car they were in hit a support column for an elevated Green Line track on Lake Street in the Austin community.

Authorities said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed that it ran into a light pole after hitting the train track column splitting the vehicle into two.

Twenty-two year old Goston; Hines, 21; and Harris, 24, were all pronounced dead at the scene around 11:55 p.m.

Twenty-one year old Nelson, who is believed to have been driving the vehicle, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she died a short time later.

Reports say Harris was a mother of three children, ages 4, 6 and 8; Hines, who worked as a cashier at a local pizzeria, was the mother of a 5-year-old boy; Nelson was the mother of a 2-year-old boy; and Goston was the mother of a 2-year-old boy.

It is believed the women were on their way to a 61^st birthday party for Goston’s grandmother.

The accident is still under investigation.

Shortly after noon on Saturday, Pamela Hargett was paragliding over Black’s Beach when for unknown reasons she lost control and crashed into a cliff.

Her boyfriend called 911 and she was airlifted to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accident is being investigated.

Friends said pilot Luke F. Sheets, 23, of Ephraim, Wisconsin; Austin G. Anderson, 27, of Ringwood, Oklahoma; Garrett Cobel, 29, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Stephen Luth, 22, of Muscatine, Iowa, were headed to the Acquire the Fire conference in Council Bluffs, Iowa, when the twin-engine Cessna 401 went down about nine miles west of Chanuet.

Sheets, Luth and Coble were pronounced dead at the scene.

Anderson survived the crash but died of his injuries early Saturday.

Reports say Sheets, Anderson and Luth were all recent graduates from Oral Roberts University.

A fifth passenger, Hannah Luce, 22, the daughter of Oral Roberts trustee was rushed to a hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Her condition was not immediately known.

Oral Roberts President Mark Rutland released a statement on Saturday saying in part: “The entire ORU community grieves for the families of the ORU graduates who lost their lives in this tragic plane accident.  May God grant them peace and they reflect on the precious lives that were so dear to their hearts.  We continue to pray for those who are recovering.”

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
