In 2007, Rose Marie Deschesnes crashed into a metal bench at the bottom of a hill while sledding at Fulton Park.

Deschesnes, who is now 24, suffered a spinal cord injury that left her a quadriplegic.

Last year, she filed a suit against the city of Waterbury saying the city should not have put a bench at the base of a popular sledding spot.

The city has since removed the bench.

Since this was a popular sledding area the city should had put a sign that said, “Sled at your own risk,” that being said, what about personal responsibility?

This is a park, parks have benches, she took that risk, and she was an adult when she took that risk.

Moments after receiving his sentence, Marcial Anguiano looked at the judge, then repeated the sentence, and then pulled a safety razor from his pocket and cut his throat.

Authorities say that the blade cut into Anguiano’s muscle but it did not strike an artery.

According to reports, before the hearing began, a bailiff noticed Anguiano holding something in his hand and asked him to put the object on the defense table. Anguiano complied, and the bailiff confiscated that blade. Authorities say the bailiff was not aware of the second razor that Anguiano had his pocket.

Normally, inmates are searched and receive a pat-down before being transferred from the jail, which is next to the courthouse.

Authorities say Anguiano received the razor while he was in jail awaiting his sentence, however, it is unclear how he was able to bring two blades into the courtroom.

Anguiano had hoped to be sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to aggravated assault for cutting his niece with a butcher knife.

Ricardo Martinez-Arenas, of Stamford, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular assault and aggravated driving while intoxicated.

Westchester authorities say Martinez-Arenas was drunk when he drove south in the northbound lanes of I-684 in the Town of Lewisboro on April 24.

Martinez-Arenas’ vehicle collided with a car carrying three woman, ages 18-21, who sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The accident left Martinez-Arenas in a wheelchair.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 19.

According to reports, the judge who heard the case against the convicted man, sent letters to several hospitals asking if they could sever the man’s spinal cord.

The accused, who has not been publicly identified, was on trial for causing the paralysis of 22-year-old Abdul-Aziz al-Mitairy during a fight.

Al-Mitairy was stabbed in the back with a large knife during a fight over two years ago.  Authorities say the accused confessed to committing the crime to police.

Amnesty International sent a letter to the Saudi Arabian authorities on Friday begging them not to paralyze the man after hearing that a hospital had agreed to do the inhumane procedure.

“According to one report,” Amnesty wrote in its letter.  “One hospital said it would be possible to medically administer the injury at the same place on the spinal cord as the damage the man is alleged to have caused his victim.”

The international organization said in addition to the hospital violating the principles of medical ethics adopted by the U.N. General Assembly, the sentence violates the prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

They said Saudi authorities would be breaking the U.N. Convention Against Torture to which Saudi Arabia is a party.

Amnesty International said the accused did not have a lawyer at his trial.

After receiving numerous complaints last year about King County District Judge Judith Raub Eiler, the state’s Judicial Conduct Commission censured Eiler, and recommended that the state Supreme Court suspend her for 90 days without pay.

The commission investigated 15 cases of misconduct and found that Eiler, who was first elected to the bench in 1992, had violated several canons of judicial ethics.

The Washington state “Judge Judy” who is known for belittling litigants and calling them “idiots” and “stupid,” once told a litigant “We don’t troll for stupid people out of state who speed over the speed limit that they think it is;” and she told another “If you drive like an idiot cause you’re late for work, you’re gonna have to pay for it….you can see your picture on the headlines of the Seattle Times, ‘Stupid young man who shouldn’t be driving.’”

The court’s majority ruled that Eiler violated one judicial canon requiring courtesy on the bench but dismissed three others cited by the commission.

Justices James Johnson, Charles Johnson and Tom Chamber and Justice Pro Tem Christine Quinn-Brintnall found that although Judge Eiler “endeavors to achieve judicial efficiency and punitive effectiveness” in a high-volume court that handles mostly small claims and traffic matters, “we require our judiciary to be efficient and effective without being rude, discourteous or demeaning.

Justices Gerry Alexander, Barbara Madsen, Debra Stephens and Mary Fairhurst dissented saying Judge Eiler, who is up for re-election in November, should be suspended for 90 days.

There could only be one “Judge Judy”

The jury unanimous found Blagojevich guilty of making false statement to the FBI; however, they were unable to reach unanimous verdicts on 23 other counts.

The judge said he would call a mistrial on the remaining counts.

Earlier today the jury had asked for a copy of the oath they took when they were sent to deliberation. They had also asked what they were to do if they could not come to a consensus of a specific count.

The former governor was facing charges of racketeering, wire fraud, attempted extortion and bribery.

The two-term Democrat was removed from office in January 2009, amid accusations that he attempted to sell the U.S. Senate seat that was occupied by Barack Obama.

Seymour hauled Brant in state Superior Court in Stamford on Friday claiming that the billionaire had auctioned off one of their Pablo Picasso paintings without notifying her.

The former Victoria Secrets model said Brant, who owns White Birch Paper Company, sold their Picasso’s “Le Baiser” (The Kiss) in June of this year for $19.1 million.

It is believed that Brant purchased the painting for $4.4 million.

While they were fighting over the money from the painting, Seymour’s lawyer took advantage of his time with the judge and demanded that the judge ask Brant to return his client’s expensive jewelry.

Brant’s lawyer shot back by saying their client is missing his expensive watch collection, which of course, Seymour’s lawyers said their client knew nothing about.

The judge told both parties they need to keep things in proper perspective and stop squabbling over a few hundred thousand dollars and keep their focus on the billions that’s at hand.

Brant insinuated that Seymour could still be using drugs. His lawyers asked the judge to have Seymour continued to be tested for drugs.

What a mess, and this is not even the trial.  The trial starts in September.

Following a four-week trial earlier this year, Jonathan Wicks was found guilty of killing his 49-year-old wife Sarah. The BBC1 executive was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday.

After hearing how Wicks, who had worked on the hit comedy series Absolutely Fabulous, Waking the dead and Holby City, had ruptured an artery in his wife’s neck, killing the petite woman immediately, Judge Richard Griffith-Jones praised Wicks for leading a “respectable and successful life” and describe the fatal argument as a minor “tiff” during yesterday’s sentencing.

Prosecutors had argued that Wicks and his wife had gotten into a fight on April 25, 2009 after Sarah had cooked a birthday lunch for her husband and three other couples at their home in Warwickshire.

During the birthday meal, Wicks had complained to his guests that his wife had over-cooked the roast beef, along with complaining about the ornamental log Sarah had gotten him for his 47^th birthday.

Prosecutors told the court that after their guests had left, Sarah had asked her husband to help her with the dishes and Wicks still being upset over the meal, refused.

It is believed that Sarah then threw five dishes at her 6ft 2in husband and Wicks’ attorney told the court that the unemployed TV executive feared his wife was going to “scratch his eyes out,” so he retaliated by hitting her in the head.

After killing his wife, Wicks fled the scene of the crime then later called a friend who convinced him to call the police. During the conversation with the police Wicks got into a nasty tirade with officers who were attempting to arrest him.

The court heard how Wicks told the arrested officers, “My wife is dead.  I may have killed her.  Do you really thing I give a flying fuck?” Yet the judge had mercy on Wicks and called him a pillar of society.

“You are a man of hitherto good character who has led a respectable and successful life,” the judge told Wicks.  “That success encompassed what I believe to be a loving and harmonious domestic life that was brought to a tragic end during a tiff between you and your much-loved wife.”

The judge went on to tell Wicks that under other circumstances Sarah would have suffered a bruised, “but in this instance [it] caused her death.”

Wicks’ has already served 110 days in custody on remand.

Houshang Jafari was sentenced to a year in prison after Bristol Crown Court heard how the 58-year-old real estate developer became “extremely angry” after a helicopter being piloted by Dr. Mark Blockland landed next to his Range Rover and caused minor damage to the vehicle as it was taking off.

The incident occurred last March after Dr. Blokland made a quick stop on the grounds of Jafari’s ritzy apartment building to pick up two colleagues, Simon Clarke and Elizabeth Hale.

The court heard how Dr. Blokland flew the Grade II with his wife on board to Dower House to pick up two passengers.

When he arrived, Dr. Blokland circled twice then landed the aircraft while keeping the rotor blades spinning at “idle” speed.

The court heard how Jafari approached the aircraft with a bag of chicken bones he was feeding his dogs and threw it the nose of the aircraft then kicked it.

As the pilot tried to take off, Jafari grabbed the skid bar, which caused the helicopter to lurch to the right.

Being afraid that the blades might take Jafari’s head off, Dr. Blokland avoid landing the helicopter on the apartment grounds and managed to land it in a nearby field.

During his sentencing on Monday, Judge Michael Roach said Jafari’s act was a “deliberate and much more a reckless one” and he had “no choice” but to sentence him to prison.

Neighbors in the multimillion dollar apartment building testified that the pilot had met with residents of the converted hospital building to get their permission to land on the grounds.  They also took pictures of the unbelievable incident to show to authorities.

It is unclear whether Jafari had given his permission.

The High Court ruled that Edward Davenport was not to film any more “porn disco” movies, have pole dance classes, sex parties and masquerade balls at his mansion.

The court was told that Davenport was having these events at his home on Portland Palace.

Westminster Council took legal actions against Davenport after neighbors complained that they were being disturbed to an “unacceptable degree.”

The council had won a temporary injunction against Davenport in January after claiming that the mansion was being used for commercial purposes without a permit.

It is believed that Davenport was charging $15 to patrons for the “porn disco” and about $135 for sex parties.

Davenport insisted that his home, which was once a former High Commission of Gambia and Sierra Leone, always held social events throughout its existence.
