The body of a two year-old girl that was found by two fishermen along the Passaic River in Clifton, New Jersey last weekend was that of a toddler who was buried in Woodland Cemetery in Stamford, Connecticut, officials confirmed.
According to Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin, two fishermen discovered the body partially submerged in a plastic bag on Sunday while they were fishing in New Jersey.
Authorities in Connecticut dug up the grave where the child, who died from a medical condition in 2007, had been buried and discovered the coffin had been tampered with, but the gravesite was not disturbed.
“The ground looked intact and looked natural, so this isn’t recent that this has happened,” said Capt. Conklin.
Authorities do not know how the body ended up in the river that is dubbed “River of Death,” because of the number of bodies that are pulled from the river.
The toddler’s parents were shocked to know that their child’s body had been removed from its final resting place.
