As I reported earlier today, Sen. Stevens’ attorneys called former Secretary of State Colin Powell as a character witness.
Mr. Powell told the jury that he had known Sen. Stevens for about 25 years and he has a ”sterling”reputation. Mr.Powell also went on to say “There has never been a suggestion he would do anything improper or that would suggest any – any – lack of integrity,”
During a very brief cross-examination, prosecutor Brenda Morris asked Powell if he knew anything about Stevens’ current criminal case, or whether he had visited Stevens’ home in Girdwood, Alaska. Powell answered, “No” to both questions.
Hey, Senator Stevens, I am sure if you ask people who played ball with OJ Simpson what he was like on the field, none of them would say, “well, I think he is capable of committing murder”. Damn, what did you expect Mr.Powell to say?!
Thank goodness the Judge reduced the number of character witnesses from 10 to 5.
