Comedian actress Phyllis Diller, who paved the way for many female comedians, passed away in her sleep at her Los Angeles home at the age of 95.

The death was confirmed by the comedian’s long time manager Milton Suchin.

The Ohio native, known for her electrified hairdo and outlandish wardrobes, did not start her career until the mid 1950s after her five children were born.

In 1999 Diller suffered a near-fatal heart attack and three years later she went into retirement.

Although Diller appeared in more than two dozen movies and numerous television shows, she was best known for her nightclub acts.
