Congressman Barney Frank of Massachusetts married his long-time boyfriend James Ready in a private ceremony on Saturday.
The 72-year-old openly gay politician is believed to be the first sitting congressman to enter into a same-sex marriage.
About 300 relatives and friends attended the ceremony, which was officiated by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, at the Boston Marriot hotel in Newton.
After more than 30 years in office, Congressman Frank, who is currently representing the 4th Congressional District in southeastern Massachusetts, will step down after his term expires this November.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Congressman John F. Tierney, of Salem, Congressman Rosa DeLauro, of Connecticut and Texas Congressman Al Green are a few of the famous politicians who attended the wedding.
Frank’s 42-year-old partner owns a small handyman business in Ogunquit, Maine.
Frank and Ready met at a political fundraising in Maine. They have been together since 2007.
Massachusetts became the first state in the U.S. to legalize same-sex marriage.
