Shortly after getting his walking papers from his city job, a maintenance worker from Costa Mesa, California, went to the roof of City Hall and jumped to his death.

Reports say 29-year-old Huy Pham had been out sick with a broken ankle when he received a call around 2:30 p.m. Thursday asking him to come into the office because he was one of 200 people being layoff.

Around 3:30 p.m., Pham, who had worked for the city for more than four years, went into the office where he was given his pink slip.

Reports say around 4:30 p.m., Pham walked to the roof of the City Hall building and jumped to his death.

Pham’s brother, John, said his brother knew the city was planning to layoff several people, but he thought his job was secure.

After the news of Pham’s death, three of his co-workers were forced to restrain a fellow city worker from attacking council members Jim Righeimer and Stephen Mensinger outside the doors of City Hall.
