Police identified CBS employee Robert Halderman, from Norwalk, Connecticut, as the person who tried to extort money from David Letterman.
Halderman, who was charged with grand larceny in the first degree, worked as a producer for the show “48 Hours.”
Original story
On his late night show on Thursday, David Letterman told his audience that a con artist attempted to extort $2 million from him.
The host of the “Late Show” told his audience that an extortionist tried to blackmail him by claiming to have proof of him bedding several of his female staff members.
“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Letterman said. “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”
The revelation came hours after the funnyman testified before a grand jury that he did indeed had “sexual relationships with members of his staff.”
The 62-year-old host contacted the Manhattan District Attorney’s office after receiving a package from an individual who claimed to have proof that the talk show host had relationships with many of his female staff members.
The man then threatened to oust the talk show host if he did not pay up.
Investigators instructed Letterman to mail a bogus $2 million check to the extortionist, which led to the man’s arrest on Thursday.
