Father Peter McDonough shocked his hearing impaired congregation when he confessed to having a son

Last Sunday, a deaf priest in England told his congregation that he was stepping down from the pulpit after revealing he was the father of a love child.

Father Peter McDonough of St. Patrick’s church in Manchester told his fellow worshippers that Sunday’s service was his last.

McDonough, who had been deaf since the age of three, told the angry crowd that he fathered a four-year-old boy with a woman he met through church work.

“He’s let down the Catholic community.  People are confessing to him, I’ve confessed to him and he’s been carrying this big secret,” said 85-year-old churchgoer James Kenny.

“What faith can you have in someone like that when it’s not say as I do but do as I say,” Kenny continued.  “He’s been here for years and should have done this as soon as he knew about the child.”

In a statement released by Monsignor Mark Davies, it said: “Following much reflection and many conversations with his bishop, Father Peter McDonough has reached this personal decision to step down from the church.  The outstanding work of St. Joseph’s Mission to the Deaf People to which Father Peter dedicated so many years of his priestly life will continue to be fully supported by the Salford Diocese.”

Father McDonough has left the church and is now taking time to consider what to do next.  He wants to take responsibility for the child and he needs to look for full-time employment.”
