UPDATE:4/09/09
Jaime Salcedo and his company Showbiz Promotions are being sued by the Attorney General of Florida for representing to potential customers that profits from the Caylee doll would benefit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and profits from the chew toys would be directed to local animal shelters and organizations, and prosecutors said little or no contributions were made to these organizations by either Salcedo or Showbiz Promotions.
The lawsuit asks that the Duval County Circuit Court issue a permanent injunction prohibiting the defendants from operating CayleeDoll.com and from engaging in any activity in violation of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.The lawsuit also seeks $10,000 in civil penalties for each willful violation of the law.
The lawsuit says the company and Salcedo intentionally misrepresented that a $5,000 donation was made to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children by Showbiz Promotions when only a $10 donation was confirmed.
Businessman Jaime Salcedo said his plans to manufacture and sell “The Inspirational Caylee Sunshine Doll,” which is named after 2-year-old Caylee Anthony, who was murdered by her mother, are suspended after hearing the public’s reaction to his idea.
Salcedo’s company, Showbiz Promotions, created the doll less than five weeks after the child’s remains were found in a bag in a wooded area near Orlando, Florida.
Hours after Salcedo made the announcement about putting the dolls on sale, he received tons of messages from people calling his idea morbid and accusing him of trying to profit from a sad situation.
During a press conference Salcedo said, “We want to give, we are not trying to get rich. We are putting ourselves at a whole lot of risk. She will be a banner for missing and exploited children, and people will know and have a better idea how to handle those situations or stop those situations from happening.”
Salcedo, who claimed that he was planning to give a portion of the proceeds to an unnamed charity, said, “It is very important that we allow the press to present our idea to the public first, in an effort to measure the reaction to our fund raising efforts. After reviewing the response to our media introduction of the Sunshine Caylee Doll and listening to the advice of the public. We feel it is best to suspend the launch of “The Sunshine Caylee Doll.”
Salcedo said that the 18-inch doll sings “My little Sunshine,” a song that Caylee was heard singing in a home video.
