Dr. Narendra Sharma is accused of molesting three women between the ages of 18 and 22, who were semi-conscious while under anesthesia when they were being operated on, authorities said.

Staff members from Manchester clinic of Marie Stopes, a charity that protects young women from the danger of back-street abortions, were allegedly in the operating room when the incidents occurred.

The operating practitioner alerted authorities to the situation after he witnessed the married doctor reaching into his pants and fondling himself while a patient was undergoing an abortion.

According to Julie Ackroyd, a nurse at the clinic, on April 18, during a procedure she was standing on the right side of a patient holding her hand, and next to her were the operating practitioner and Dr. Sharma.

She said she became suspicious of the doctor’s hand movements after he started lowering his left hand.  She said he then took the patient’s hand and started performing a sexual act on himself.

The nurse told the Manchester Crown Court that her reaction was one of shock, horror and disbelief.

Prosecutor Michael Lavery told the court that, “Because of what she had seen, the nurse spoke with the operating practitioner,” he said.  “She asked him to observe the doctor for the rest of the day.  She didn’t report it further.”

On April 29, the operating practitioner said he witnessed the doctor reaching into his trousers and pleasuring himself during a termination.

Lavery said it happened again during another procedure.

Two of the women became aware of the situation after they received phone calls from the clinic.

The clinic said that they have not been able to contact the third woman.

Dr. Sharma, an anesthesiologist, said he is the victim of a racist vendetta by his staff.

He argued that holding the patient’s hand close to a doctor’s body is necessary to monitor her level of sedation.
