A weak earthquake has been felt by residents northwest of Charleston, but no damage was immediately reported.

A quake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale was recorded at 7:42 a.m. Tuesday.

Such an earthquake can sometimes be felt, but generally causes little damage.

Carrieanne Bedwell, a seismologist with the Earthquake Hazards Program of the U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado, says the quake was centered about 10 miles east-southeast of Summerville.

The quake was in an area of a fault where the deadly Charleston earthquake of 1886 occurred.

The 1886 quake was a magnitude 7.3 that killed more than 100 people and destroyed about $5 million worth of property – worth $103 million when adjusted for inflation.
