Authorities in Delaware are investigating the death of former Pentagon official whose body was found in a landfill on New Year’s Eve.

The body of 66-year-old John P. Wheeler III, a veteran of Washington politics, who worked in both Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations in establishing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, was discovered at Wilmington’s Cherry Island Landfill on December 31.

Wheeler’s death is being treated as a homicide.

Reports say a spotter, whose job it was to make sure that hazardous material was not dumped in the landfill, noticed Wheeler’s body jutting out of a garbage truck.

It is believed that Wheeler’s body was picked up by the truck at one of ten specially designated dumpster pick-ups spots before heading to the landfill.

It is unclear whether Wheeler lived alone, but reports say he had an ongoing feud with one of his neighbors.
