Garfield Anthony Sibblies, 40, the son of acclaimed internationally Canadian-Jamaican reggae singer Leroy Sibblies, was sentence to 6 ½ years in prison, for the killing of 12-month-old Elijah Sibblies a few days before his first birthday.
Sibblies, who admitted to slapping the infant on the side of his head and shaking him until he fell to the floor, said he married the child’s mother and gave the child his last name in order to help them migrate to Canada.
He told the court that after he married the infant’s mother, he felt trapped and very frustrated because he could no longer move on with his own life. So, on March 22, 2006, when he was home along with the infant, he became frustrated that Elijah was not swallowing his food, and that’s when he took out his frustration on the child.
An autopsy revealed that the infant suffered 38 injuries including a brain injury consistent with impact and shaking, but the coroner could not pinpoint which injury caused his death.
Justice Bruce Durno, gave Sibblies credit for the three years he served in prison while awaiting his sentencing, so now, he will only spend six more months in prison.
The judge did however ordered him to take anger management and parental counseling, to submit his DNA to the national databank, and ordered him to stay away from children under the age of 10
