The body of a man believed to be in his 30’s, was twice exhumed from a Muslim cemetery because residents thought he was gay.
Last Saturday, the family of the dead man buried his body in a Muslim cemetery in the Senegal’s western town of Thies, and residents dug up the body and left it near his grave.
The man’s family then reburied him, but once again, the body was exhumed and this time dumped on the front door of his family’s house.
Officials said the family eventually buried the man’s body in the yard of a family member.
Senegal outlaws homosexual acts, however, there is a tradition of effeminate men, and, “Goor-jiggen” (men-women) who dresses up as women and socialized with females have long been tolerated in the Muslim country.
