It was January 2008 when Erica Smith, part-time stay at home mom, and Natasha Young, full-time stay at home mom, met for the first time thinking that this would be the beginning of yet another playgroup to take their young sons. As the conversation progressed, they realized that this would be no ordinary playgroup but the beginning of a business together. The Green Bear Company was born. The mission was to create products for children that make motherhood less stressful and keep children as healthy as possible.

The brainstorming began when Erica felt overwhelmed when going to the doctor’s office for her then 5 month old. Instead of waiting in the waiting area, she would wait in her car because she felt as if she could “see” the germs approaching her child. The fear of the spread of germs range from the curious stranger who approaches your child just a bit too close, to see how adorable your newborn is, while allowing the baby to hold his germy finger, to the curious toddler who just want to see the baby then unintentionally sneezes and coughs all over him.

One of the most fearful seasons for a parent is the cold and flu season, especially for babies under 12 weeks old or those who were born premature or with respiratory problems. Traditionally, parents would use a blanket to place over the infant’s carrier as protection. But blankets are not secure. They move and fall off of the carrier. When it does fall off, you do not know which side was exposed to the germs and which side is supposed to be clean. It is a pain and time consuming.
