UPDATE 3/19/09

The indictment was filed in a Tel Aviv court. No date has yet been set for the actual trial.

The former president of Israel is expected to be indicted on charges of rape and sexual assault of a number of his former employees, according to Israel’s justice ministry.

In a statement that was released by Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, former President Moshe Katsav will be charged with obstruction of justice this week.

In 2007, Katsav agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges and pay a fine in order to avoid jail time, but reneged when it came time to enter his plea.

Katsav was the president of Israel from 2000 to 2007, and prior to that, he was the minister of tourism.

He was forced to resign in June 2007, after the allegations of sexual abuse surfaced from both jobs.
