Forty-three year old Kwong Yan and his 28-year-old wife, Qi Tan, were arrested and charged with one count each of failing to provide the necessities of life and criminal negligence causing bodily harm, after police discovered Yan’s 68-year-old mother living in a non-insulated garage in Toronto.

Responding to a tip on February 23, police found the woman in the garage of a home on McCowan Road.

Reports say the woman was sleeping on a makeshift mattress on a wooden board and her toes were frost-bitten.

She was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors soon discovered she had also suffered physical injuries.

During an investigation, it was determined that Yan and Tan moved the victim to the garage last November and rented room several rooms in the home.

Yan and Tan also lived in the home.
