Police say Dennis Carter Sr. shot four family members, three fatally, before turning the gun on himself.

A 50-year-old Louisiana man shot and killed his estranged wife along with their 26-year-old son and 2-year-old grandson before turning the gun on himself as police closed in on him.

Holden police responding to a shooting call around 10:40 p.m. on Saturday found three people dead and a fourth in critical condition.

According to authorities, Dennis Carter Sr. shot and killed his wife, Donna Carter, 49, their son Dennis Carter Jr., and Mason Carter, and critically injured his pregnant daughter-in-law Amber Carter.

Authorities believe Amber, who was shot several times in the back, was attempting to escape her father-in-law by jumping from a second-story window holding Mason in her arms.

Around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, police in the adjacent town of Livingston saw the suspect entering interstate 12 and followed his car.

According to officials, “the suspect shot himself with a handgun, in plain view of the officers, as the vehicle veered off the should of the interstate.”

Records from the Livingston Parish Detention Center show Dennis Carter Sr. had been jailed on three separate occasions in 2009 for violating a protective order and aggravated domestic assault.

Authorities Carter did not injure a 16-month-old child who was also in the home.
