Authorities said the man who committed suicide earlier today by jumping from the Peninsula Hotel was from Coral Gables, Florida.
Hotel staff told police the 40-year-old man had tried to check into the hotel earlier in the day and he was told there were no vacancies; however, he left his credit card at the front desk and made his way up to the closed sun deck on the 22nd floor.
The hotel staff tried to stop him and they called security, who escorted him down to the restaurant on the bottom floor.
The suicide man ate some breakfast then made a dash back up to the 22nd floor, where he ran by the gym and spa then jumped onto a ledge throwing himself off the roof.
He landed on a Cadillac Escalade that was parked outside, with driver Engel Nicasio sitting inside having a cup of coffee.
Thirty-seven year old Nicasio, a chauffeur from Washington Heights, later told reporters “I was inside the vehicle having a cup of coffee and a bagel. I had been standing outside the vehicle minutes earlier. I heard a big bang.”
He said hotel security came over and helped him out of the SUV.
Nicasio said the victim’s “body was separated at the waist.”
