Update: 12/27/09

Authorities arrested a second Nigerian man who was aboard the jet from the Netherlands to Detroit.

It is believed that the man, whose identity has not been revealed yet, locked himself in the bathroom of the Northwest flight when it landed in Detroit.

Update: 10:38 p.m.

A House Intelligence Committee member identified the suspect as Abdul Mudallad, however, some news media outlets have identified him as Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.


Abduolmutallab is an engineering student at University College of London.

Update: 7:39 p.m.

The White House is considering the incident on the Delta flight today a terrorist attack.

According to reports, the suspect, who was treated for burns suffered in the explosion, is claiming to have extremist affiliation.

It is believed he obtained the device and instructions in Yemen.

Update: 5:00 p.m.

The suspect is identified as a 23-year-old Nigerian man who left Lagos, Nigeria on Thursday then boarded Flight 253 in Amsterdam Friday.

A passenger onboard a Northwest Airlines flight from Netherlands to Detroit ignited fireworks, airlines officials said.

The passenger on the Airbus 330 that was carrying 278 passengers was immediately subdued.

One passenger was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.
