Update

Sources close to the Madoff’s say Mark had been depressed for several months before his suicide as the taint attached to his name made it impossible for him to find a job.

They said the suit that was filed against him and his brother on Friday was the straw that finally broke the camel’s back.

Mark’s mother, Ruth, is said to be blaming her disgrace husband Bernie for her son’s death.

Relatives gathered at Mark’s Greenwich home on Sunday to discuss the funeral arrangements.  Sources say it is likely that a private service will be held in Greenwich.

Original story

We knew this day was coming, but we did not expect it to happen around Christmas.

Bernard Madoff’s son, Mark, committed suicide early this morning in his SoHo apartment.

Police responding to an emergency call at 158 Mercer Street around 7:30 a.m. found Mark Madoff hanging from his neck by a dog leash, which was attached to a pipe in the ceiling of the apartment.

The 46-year-old man was found by his father-in-law and his 2-year-old son.

It is believed that Mark’s wife, Stephanie, who was in Florida with their 4-year-old child, became concerned about her husband after receiving disturbing emails from him.

Stephanie Madoff sent her father to check on Mark and that’s when he made the gruesome discovery.

Ironically, Mark’s father Bernie was arrested two years today over his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. The senior Madoff is serving 150 years in prison.

This week, Mark and his brother Andrew were sued by Irving Picard, a court appointed trustee recovering assets for the Bernard Madoff’s victims.

Mark and his wife Stephanie were also Greenwich residents.
