After twenty-eight of being in a coma, Martha “Sunny” Von Bulow died today at a nursing home in NY City.
In 1982, Sunny’s husband Claus was convicted of trying to kill her by injecting her with insulin at their Newport, R.I estate. In 1985, he filed an appealed and Claus was acquitted. Claus’ accusers in the case were his stepchildren, Princess Annie Laure Von Auersperg Kniessl and Prince Alexander Von Auersper.
One month after the Claus’ acquittal, Sunny’s children filed a civil lawsuit against their stepfather. Two years after the lawsuit was filed, Claus agreed to give up claims to Sunny’s $40 million estate and the income trust that Sunny had set up for him. He also agreed to divorce Sunny, leave the country, and never profit from their story.
During the trial, prosecutors said that Claus injected Sunny with insulin in 1979 causing her to become comatose temporarily. His second attempt was a year later and Sunny slipped into an irreversible coma.
