A 36-year-old British man has been arrested after authorities say he held employees and customers at a Barclays Bank in Surrey hostage for about three hours on Monday with a fake gun.

Wearing a clear boiler suit and welding goggles, Matthew Nutley walked into the bank in Ashford near Heathrow and threatened to kill employees if the manager did not open the safe.

Hostages said Nutley, who had a shopping bag containing vodka, cigarettes and several boiler suits, starting screaming “I’ve lost a house; you are going to lose your money” while the manager was opening the safe.

Nutley then ordered bank employees to spray paint the windows black then offered them cigarettes and vodka to “calm their nerves.”

Once he had the money, police said he then ordered several hostages to put on the boiler suits that were in the shopping bag to confused police who had surrounded the building.

After a three-hour-standoff, police arrested Nutley and charged him with robbery, false imprisonment, possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit robbery and two counts of making threats to kill.

Police say no one was hurt during the incident.
