Three Toronto area residents, including Mohammed Saheed were arrested and charged in a $5 million real estate fraud.
Saheed, 42, along with accomplices, Winston McDowell, 67, Hollis Straker, 62, and Devika Dhanaswar, 48, allegedly convinced a group of individuals with limited financial resources to pool their money together and invest in real estate projects he was developing and would managed.
It is believed from February 2005 to present, the four men stole more than $5 million from at least 100 victims.

I guess the police, after building their enormous case against Saheed and his cohorts, for all of their wrongdoings against the Caribbean community they targeted, are all wrong, too, with no basis to have arrested these bigtime CROOKS. Only someone connected with Saheed would write responses mentioning “bankruptcy” as a message to send out to the people they all victimized. Who cares now about him and bankruptcy??? If Saheed did write the first few blogs, then his own words are fully in line with how he operates. He takes as much money he can swindle out of you as a loan to his company, giving you promissory notes and promises to give you generous interest payments monthly. After one or two payments, he goes into default for them and gives all imanginable reasons for why he can’t pay you, blaming everyone in the world but himself. And when you sit before him (when you can find him) for the umpteenth time asking for your money back, he’ll inform you of all the people he made big money for and how they have the gall to be saying ill things against him. Oscar-calibre actor he is because he’ll get all indignant, angry-seeming and everything. But funny, he’ll never address that he’s not paying your money back, along with all the others you know of who are in the same boat as you who cannot get him to return their money. He’ll instead -in the right word someone used – *slickly* make claims about what he did for others in the past and then he’ll make new promises for paying back your money after the latest deal of the moment goes through. There’s always some deal to be finalized soon that will reap your loaned money. There’s no question that he and the others who worked with and for him are all guilty of fraud. There is nothing whatsoever innocent about Mohamed Saheed.
Well, on Friday December 18th, the criminal got denied bail. Woohoo!!! An early Christmas present for all the investor victims whose lives were wrecked financially by Saheed, the lowlife. Normal accused people get their bail hearings heard in a morning or afternoon and it’s done. Big-time criminals like Saheed need 4 FULL days (Dec. 15-18)to get the yards-long list of charges under 10 counts of fraud covered, with him in his glassed prisoner box, in courtrooms dedicated only to his case. No doubt he’ll fight the bail denial because remember, with his stunning disconnect from all his crimes – many committed while he was already out on bail from an arrest way back in January, 2008 – he is an innocent man. Uh huh.

For “WTF:” Mohamed Saheed’s bail hearing commenced on Tuesday December 15, lasted 3 full days (it took this long for the 10 counts of fraud against him and the numerous charges under each count to be heard in court) and on the 4th day (December 18th), the judge denied him bail. Thus, he was returned to lock-up in Metro East Detention Centre at 55 Civic Road in Scarborough and he is currently appealing the bail decision. He will next appear in the Scarborough court at Warden & Eglinton on Monday January 4th at 10am, in room 407, for a date to be set for his trial. Transcripts of the bail hearing can be obtained partially or fully from the Scarborough court and from the Old City Hall court. Presumably his plea was “not guilty” as he has believed he is all along in his warped & demented mind.

I am sorry and admit that my husband Mohamed and I are guilty of all the scams we are accused of and we will seek to pay restitution to all the victims we stole money from. We could never pay it all back as most of the stolen money is hidden away securely but we want to do the right thing as much as possible so that our daughter, Aliyah Saheed will be safe from God’s wrath and will be safe in our home at 23 Clapperton Drive, Ajax (we still live there though we removed ownership from our names) with at least me, her mother, when my husband is tried, found guilty and is jailed for the crimes from which we (including Winston McDowell, Hollis Straker and Elise Agard) cannot escape. When Mo started Reica, he was living in a townhouse paying a mortgagge and a leased family van. He always dreamnt of being filthy rich. ‘The first Guyanese Billionaire’ as he put it. Reica started out as a legitimate company, but the man didn’t. Mo carefully crafted every move to get him where he is today. Not the jail part, that is a side effect he didn’t bank on. He used his soft demeaner and attitude of helping others to reel in trusting people. But he couldn’t pull it off alone. He got the right men for the job in his wife, Hollis and Winston. The most willing participant that we can have are those close to us. He conned everyone that came into contact with him, including people who have a strong belief in Christianity (they were at his mercy). Consider for a moment the following; If Mo made lots of money for people, why is he still in jail? Why won’t any of these people bail him out of this mess? Because the people he made money for was paid by other investors getting on board, so he can draw in more people. (CLASSIC PONZI SCHEME). People who did ‘make money’ never came back, because they knew the next time all their money will be gone. Most of the people who did get back thir monies had to use threats and lots of noise for it. Most of the people who had investments with Mo did not have paper work. Not that they did not need it, but he was always in the process of finishing the paper work and will get it to them once it was completed. CLASSIC CON ARTIST move. Keep promising daily only. The promises would have gone on for years had he not been arrested for fraud. By the way, one cannot file for bankruptcy if the means of acquiring funds was done through fraud. He would have had to show tremendous paper work to accomplish this, of which he does not have. Hope the bankruptcy crap is put to rest. The first time he was arrested for fraud was in Feb ‘09. He got out of it by paying the client back. However part of his bail conditions was not to take anymore monies from people again, which he broke and was re-arrested for it. To Mr. ‘Naive’ and everyone else. Yes, get as much info as you can to the police regarding this whole matter. As for what justice is going to be served, that is in the hands of the Court system. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed.
Important to show up at hearings for the benefit of the crown and the case. The judge needs to see as many victims as possible. We honestly will not know the outcome of this whole thing in advance.
Leslie is right, we are not idiots, just trusting, we are also not greedy, just trying to get ahead, we were just promised great things and trusted on it blindly. (Everyone is always trying to get ahead in life, nothing wrong with that) However it is vultures like Mo, his wife and the other two who prey on honest, hard working people. This week, on February 2nd, 2010, Saheed, in his bail review (appeal of the bail denial decision in Dec. 2009), WAS ONCE AGAIN DENIED BAIL. He is still locked up at Toronto East Detention Centre (formerly known as Metro East Detention Centre, but commonly known as “The East”)and this was confirmed when I called the jail today (416-750-3513). They also confirmed that the prisoners have no access whatsoever to computers, so we could be reasonably sure that many or most of the “support” blogs posted here for Saheed are written by his loyal and dependent wife, except the obviously mocking one in her name. Here is some information regarding bail:
The term “remand” may be used to describe the process of keeping a person in detention rather than granting bail. A prisoner who is denied, refused or unable to meet the conditions of bail, or who is unable to post bail, may be held in a prison on remand. Reasons for being held in custody on remand vary depending on the local legal system, but may include:
- the suspect has been accused of carrying out a particularly serious offence
- the suspect having previous convictions for similar offences
- reasons to believe the suspect could leave the court’s jurisdiction to avoid its trial and possible punishment
- reasons to believe the suspect may destroy evidence or interfere with witnesses
- the suspect is likely to commit further offences before the trial
- the suspect is believed to be in danger from accomplices, victims, or vigilantes
“Curious”, I suggest you contact the Toronto Police with whatever information you can provide them with. Even if you got back most of your money. The point here is to assist with showing how the money was obtained from you (including any paper work you may have) fraudulenty. I do suggest that you be honest with the Police regarding the end results of your investments. You are one of the lucky ones.
Anyone saw The Fifth Estate last night (fri. Feb 5)? Earl Jones ran a Ponzi scheme successfully for almost 25 years before getting caught. He even took his brother and his wife for almost one million ($1,000,000) (their retirement).

And i do realize how lucky i am.

As of Tuesday, criminals like Clay Davis won’t be given 2-for-1 credit for time served

It’s quite a system that sees a career criminal receiving his 100th conviction at 2 p.m. and being set free from incarceration at 2:30 p.m.
But two-for-one justice has come to an end.
As of Tuesday, receiving two-for-one time served while in custody awaiting trial is no longer in effect. Quietly, thanks to the federal government’s Bill C-25, the very landscape of the justice system has changed.
For example, Clay Davis celebrated his 100th criminal offence Monday by standing on the steps of Old City Hall and enjoying freedom with a bummed smoke. Just before he was in custody, and before court, charged in a string of car break-and-enters and allegations he resisted arrest and confronted a police officer with a screwdriver.
“Scary,” is how arresting officer 14 Division Det. Izzy Bernardo described it.
But by the time Davis’ skilled defence counsel Mike Morse and overworked Crown attorney Joanne MacDonald whittled down the 43 charges from an alleged Dec. 4, 2009 car break-in crime spree, Davis pleaded guilty to a watered down three counts of theft, assault and resisting arrest and having possession of burglary tools.
In a joint submission to attentive Mr. Justice Richard D. Schneider, they agreed on a two-for-one time-served basis, the 45-year-old’s 86 days in custody would be credited for 172 days — almost six months — and enough time for these crimes. Although Crown attorney MacDonald said “it’s a horrendous record,” there was no effort to suggest progressive sentencing for such a repeat offender.
Instead, it was like Christmas. The court asked Davis to not carry a screwdriver anymore, and out the doors of Old City Hall and into society he went.
Before Tuesday that is how things worked in the court system. It was routine. Normal.
Not anymore. Judges will not have the ability to be as lenient. The bill, for all cases forward from today, has taken away the discretion from them to grant two-for-one pre-trial credit.
It means time served is exactly that. No more breaks.
“That’s huge,” Joe Wamback, founder of the Canadian Crime Victim Foundation, said Monday night. “I can tell you of examples of people receiving four-for-one credit so, yes, this is appreciated.”
It is a victory for Wamback, who has fought for this for years. “It’s very positive and indicates our government is listening.”
But not everybody agrees: “It’s a tinderbox,” said Morse, a criminal lawyer for 35 years who predicts “stacking up” inmates in cramped institutions is going to get ugly. “Warehousing these people three to a cell is not going to rehabilitate them.”
Veteran defence counsel Jordan Weisz says putting money into drug rehabilitation might bring upon better results.
“Nobody ever said jail was supposed to be a nice place,” was Wamback’s response. “What about protecting society?”
There is great debate and great debaters on both sides. But the system is not working, as is illustrated by the revolving door justice system that routinely caught and released Davis with no positive results.
He is both the poster boy for the old system and for the new. The break he got Monday does not exist in Canadian courts anymore.
“I am not proud of it,” he told me of his 100 convictions and tough life that wasn’t helped out by being physically abused as a child. “I spent half my life in jail and I make no excuses.”
His problem is crack and he told Judge Schneider that “I know I am living life but I don’t happen to be very good at it.”
“Into the Great White North,” lawyer Morse said about his client’s so-called freedom which has realities of no money, nowhere to stay and no prospects.
“I have no idea,” Davis told me when I asked him where he would go.
History has shown what could happen next.
The interesting part is that Morse, copper Bernardo, Judge Schneider, Crown MacDonald and victim’s advocate Wamback, too, all wish Davis could find some way to stop committing crimes.
But should there be a 101st conviction, one thing Clay Davis won’t be receiving in the future is double time for time served.
Those gravy train days are over.
