In her first interview since being set on fire by her ex-boyfriend, Naomie Breton says she is just happy to be alive.
“I just thank God that I’m alive, because in looking at the picture, I probably shouldn’t be here right now,” the 33-year-old single mother said.
Breton was attacked by her ex-boyfriend, Rossevelt Mondesir, out outside a Florida gas station on Monday.
Security footage from a 7-Eleven store in Boynton Beach showed Breton being chased by Mondesir with a knife just before he doused her with gasoline then set her on fire.
“All I saw was that I was on fire,” Breton said. “That’s when I was screaming and I was trying to pat myself to the point that the only way I saw to keep myself alive was to take off my shirt.”
Roosevelt, who is the father of Breton’s child, was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder.
The couple had arranged to meet at the gas station so that Breton could pick up their 4-year-old son, whom they have joint custody of.
Breton said when she got to the gas station she realized that her ex-boyfriend did not have their child, but he had a machete in his hand. She said he then took out a can of gasoline and began pouring it on her.
Mondesir then took a lighter and set his ex-girlfriend on fire.
Breton, who was recently denied a protective order against Mondesir, did not say why she thought the father of her child wanted her dead.
