An off-duty NY police officer and three of his friends, are accused of beating up a black man in a racially motivated attack.
Police Officer Juan Nunez, 32, and his three friends, Jose Miguel Vargas, 35, Persio Vargas, 53, and Kelvin Vargas, 24, are accused of attacking 52-year-old Daryl Jackson as he waited outside of a deli to use a pay phone.
Authorities said that after a brief argument, the men attacked Jackson with their fists and a bat then shouted racial epithets at him.
Jackson was taken to a hospital where he told a local newspaper that the four Hispanic men ordered him to move and when he did not, they started beating him and used some racist slurs.
“I said, ‘I don’t like to be called names,’ and one of them said, ‘Go back to Africa,’” Jackson said.
Nunez, who is a seven-year veteran, was suspended from the 101st precinct in Far Rockaway Queens, NY.
