A 31-year-old man was shot and killed early this morning after a melee broke out on a dangerously overcrowded boat at the South Street Seaport.

Omar Trent was shot in the head in a parking lot at Pier 17 after a fight that started on the vessel spilled out into the streets when it docked around 4:00 a.m.

Workers on the boat said there was chaos on the vessel, which was scheduled to leave around 1:00 a.m. but did not because it was overcrowded, before they set sail for what was to be a night of having fun.

Perry Rumnit, a worker on the boat told reporters he had to lock himself, his co-workers and some passengers in the ships kitchen to escape the nasty brawl that was taking place on the Houston River.

Witnesses said after the shooting, the gunman took off in a dark gray van.

A parking lot attendant told reports “All I saw were people running, girls ducking near my booth to hide for cover. Someone told me that someone was shot so I got down too. People were running everywhere screaming, trying to get away.”
