Canada’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into a shooting Friday morning involving officers from the Toronto police department.
Witnesses told reporters they saw several officers surrounding a man, believed to be about 29, shortly after 10:00 a.m. Friday near Danforth and Coxwell avenues.
They said about six officers approached the man, who was wearing what looked like a blue hospital gown, from behind while three other officers were in the front of him.
The officers then tackled the man to the ground and while on the ground one of the officers shot and killed him.
The man, who is believed to have been a patient Toronto East General Hospital, was taken to St. Michael’s Hospital, where he later died.
Authorities later said the man was threatening the officers with a pair of scissors.
