NEW YORK (CNN) — A portion of a five-story building collapsed in New York City early Thursday morning, emergency officials said.
No one was hurt. The vacant building on Reade Street in Manhattan was under construction, a spokesman for New York’s Office of Emergency Management said.
Video of the scene showed firefighters surveying the building that appeared to have a huge hole in it. A large mound of debris spilled out onto the street covering vehicles.
One witness said he could hear the collapse from half a block away.
“White dust was everywhere, I couldn’t see down the block,” said Louis Ruiz, who said he was walking to work at about 6 a.m. when the incident happened. “I had no idea what happened.”
