Rescuers found the bodies of Phil Burke and his daughter Kara Ann

From CBS NEWS MIAMI

The search continues for a South Florida father and daughter who vanished after a day on the water.

George Pino, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said 49-year old Phil Burke and his 8-year old daughter, Kara Ann, took off in a 17 foot Key West pleasure craft from Black Point Marina in Cutler Bay around 4:20 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Their plan was to return around dusk. At midnight, when they still hadn’t returned a family member called the U.S. Coast Guard to report them as missing.

At 5 a.m., Coast Guard search teams along with personnel from the Miami-Dade police department, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, National Park Service and the FWC searched a large grid by sea and by air.

Around 7:30 a.m. Burke’s boat was found in mangroves a few miles north of the marina, but there was no sign of him or his daughter.

Still, Leonard Pelzman with the Fish and Wildlife Commission hasn’t lost hope.

“Unfortunately as you said time is not on our side. We have three helicopters up, we have several boats in the water and we’re trying to locate these individuals and our hope is that we find them well and nothing happened,” Pelzman said.

Boaters at the Black Point Marina said they are concerned about the missing father and daughter. “It’s terrible to hear anyone goes out there and had this type of problem, it breaks my heart,” said Leonard Pelzman.
