A SkyWest Airlines pilot wanted for killing his girlfriend committed suicide in a stolen jetliner.

Police conducting a welfare check at a home in Colorado Springs last Friday found Christina Cornejo stabbed to death.

Cornejo’s ex-boyfriend, Brian Hedglin, was immediately named a suspect in the murder.

Police said Hedglin stabbed his 39-year-old girl to death then fled the area.

Early Tuesday morning 40-year-old Hedglin, who served in the Colorado Army National Guard with Cornejo, rode his motorbike to St George Municipal Airport in Utah while it was closed and scaled a razor wire fence.

Authorities said he then boarded an empty 50-seat passenger CRJ200 plane and taxied it onto the runway, clipping the wing before crashing into cars in a parking lot.

He then shot himself in the cockpit.

Meanwhile, guards making routine checks at the airport noticed a rug over the razor fence and before they were able to investigate it they heard the sound of a plane’s engine firing up.

The guard spotted the idle aircraft and boarded it and discovered the pilot dead.

Police said Hedglin shot himself in the head.
