According to new directives, Waltham Forest and Newham councils ordered schools to shut their doors for the annual celebrations of Eid-UI-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, Diwali, which is celebrated by Hindus, and Guru Nanak’s birthday, which is celebrated by Sikhs and Nanak’s teachings form a central part of their scripture.

Although the Cabinet member for children and young people in Waltham Forest said, it is important to teach children about different cultures and backgrounds, most headmasters and parents disagree.

The new policy is currently being reviewed.
