A 50-year-old renowned children’s surgeon died over the weekend while attempting to save the lives of two young boys.

Dr. Donald Liu and his family were spending time at a friend’s beach home near Lake Michigan when he saw two young boys struggling in choppy waters.

The Chicago doctor went out to help before rescue workers arrived.

Dr. Liu, who was the surgeon-in-chief and professor of surgery and pediatrics at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, drowned before he was able to save the children, who survived the traumatic incident.

It is believed the doctor was caught in a riptide.

Shock and lost for words, Dr. Liu’s widow, Dr. Dana Suskin, was able to call her husband was “an amazing man.”

Dr. Liu leaves behind his wife and their three children, Genevieve, 13; Asher, 10 and Amalie, 7.
