The Rev. John Regan, a Catholic priest in Chicago, was indicted yesterday on charges that he stole more than $300,000 from St. Walter Parish.

Regan, 45, who has been the pastor at St. Walter’s for more than two years, is accused of taking cash and checks that were meant as church offerings, and putting them into his personal bank account.

In 2008, Regan was given administrative leave by the Joliet, Illinois, diocese because he had a gambling addiction.

Ragan used an ATM card to withdraw money that he stole from the church at Riverboat Casinos.

He also used some of the money to back off his personal credit cards.

He was charged with nine counts of theft over $100,000 from a place of worship, one count of continuing financial crimes enterprise, seven counts of theft and four counts of money laundering.

Now here is someone who should know better.
