Authorities in Virginia say an off-duty sheriff’s deputy killed his ex-wife and shot a state trooper on Memorial Day.
Roanoke Police Chief Chris Perkins said the bloodshed began around 11:30 a.m. Monday when Deputy Jonathan Agee’s ex-wife, Jennifer, pulled into a Sheetz convenience store parking lot. Perkins said the 32-year-old deputy, from Boones Mill, followed his 30-year-old ex to the parking lot and as she exited her vehicle he opened fire hitting her.
Agee then fled the scene leaving his ex-wife to die.
An alert was issued for Agee’s vehicle and it was later spotted by Sgt. Matt Brannock on Route 460.
Brannock followed Agee until they got to an exit at which time Agee opened fire hitting the officer.
Authorities say there was a shootout between both officers and Agee was left with life-threatening wounds.
Both officers were airlifted to a local hospital.
Reports say 35-year-old Brannock is expected to make a full recovery.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Agee, who lived in Salem, was rushed to Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she died.
Reports say at the time that Jennifer Agee was shot in the parking lot; a young child was in her vehicle. The reports did not say whether the Agee’s were the child’s parents.
Charges are expected to be filed against Agee if he recovers from his injuries.
