Going for a song: Detained suspect Sony Dong, with songbirds strapped to his legs at Los Angeles International Airport. He was arrested as he tried to walk out the airport and officials noticed feathers

Forty-six year old Sony Dong was caught trying to smuggle more than a dozen birds into Los Angeles International Airport from Vietnam, authorities said.

Dong was busted after an airport staff noticed bird feathers and dropping on his socks and tail feathers peeking out from his pants.

This particular bird lover is well known to LAX officials. Three months ago, he abandoned a suitcase containing 18 birds at the airport.

A spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office said Dong secured the birds to a specialized cloth wrappings attached to his calves with buttons.

Bird smugglers purchase the animals in Vietnam on the streets for $10 to $30 then sell them to collectors for about $400.
