An eighteen-year-old British girl was strangled to death after her scarf got caught in the engine of a go-Kart Thursday night.
According to reports, after Cambridgeshire Raceway was closed for the day, track marshal Andy Kilvin invited six of his friends to use the track “to impress his new girlfriend.”
While riding one of the karts, Suzanne Cornwell’s scarf got caught in the engine and the teenager was killed.
Around 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, Cambridgeshire secretary, Phil Meakins said he received a phone call from Kilvin, 24, stating there was an accident at the track and he had called an ambulance but it was not serious.
Meakins said it wasn’t until two hours later after the police contacted him he realized how serious the accident was.
He said Kilvin, who was expected to lock up and leave around 9:00 p.m., had “turned off the CCTV for the whole site before letting his girlfriend and five friends onto the track.” All the other staff had left the raceway at 8:00 p.m.
Kivin’s, whose responsibility was to make sure riders were wearing helmets, adjusting the cars and monitoring races, was also riding, so unfortunately for Suzanne, no one was watching the track when the accident happened.
Suzanne, who lived with her parents in older brother in Hardwick, Cambs, was studying at Long Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge.
A vigil was held for the teenager at her former school, Comberton Village College Sunday night.
No criminal charges have been filed against Kilvin, who has been with the raceway for two years.
