A top Homeland Security official, Lorraine Henderson was arrested and charged with repeatedly hiring illegal immigrants to work in her home in Salem, Massachusetts.

Officials have been looking into Ms. Henderson’s illegal activities since 2004 one year after she became Director, when she recommended her illegal Brazilian housekeeper to one of her colleagues.

When her colleague interviewed the housekeeper, she found out that the housekeeper was an illegal immigrant. The colleague than confronted her about what the housekeeper said and she told her colleague not to worry about it, plus she is usually not at home when the housekeeper arrives and she only communicates with her via notes or telephone. Her colleague turned both her and the housekeeper in, and the housekeeper decided to corporate with the authorities.

Authorities wired the housekeeper and Ms. Henderson was caught on tape telling to housekeeper, “You have to be careful ‘because they will deport you. Be careful, if you leave, they will not let you back. You cannot leave, do not leave ‘because one you leave you will never be back.”

Ms. Henderson’s responsibilities as Boston Area Port Director, is to stop people from entering the country through air and seaports in the New England states of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

U.S Attorney Michael Sullivan said in a statement today, “For any member of Customs and Border Protection to allegedly compromise their authority, and the security of our international ports of entry…..violating the same immigration laws that they are charged with upholding in unconscionable.”
